Homemade Yogurt

I have been wanting to make homemade yogurt for years.  This is the year of “I’ve always wanted to do this” (“this” is several things that will spill over into 2016, 17, 18 …. you get the picture).  After watching several YouTube videos and reading several recipes, I decided to follow Erica Strauss’ instructions from Northwest Edible Life.  Erica covers yogurt making, preserving food making soap, toothpaste, cheese and countless other topics in her new book “The Hands-On Home” just released from Sasquatch Books (I pre-ordered mine).

Here is Erica’s link: Homemade Yogurt  not mentioned on her website is an addition of 1 cup of Heavy Cream in the milk mixture, she mentioned this on The Survival Podcast where I first found out about her and she is on Jack Spirko’s Expert Council (she knows her stuff).  This will make 5 pint jars and taste fabulous!

Our Little Farm!

We have always loved animals, all animals (rats are not animals, they are demons from hell), so when we had a chance to move into my parents house on a couple of acres after my Dad passed away in 2004, we expanded from our one dog and four or five cats to two dogs and then added goats and chickens.  Well, we decided to add a bee hive to our now what seemed to be looking like a farm.. then another and yet another (we also love the taste of honey (but who doesn’t?)).  We currently have several projects underway and the purpose of this blog is to share our success and our failures as we attempt to move to a more sustainable lifestyle incorporating Permaculture ethics on our little farm as well as introduce natural products made from ingredients from our homestead.
